CPRE fights for a better future for Leicestershire’s countryside

Leicestershire is a beautiful and astonishingly diverse county.

All too often the qualities and importance of its attractive countryside and picturesque unspoilt landscapes go unrecognised.  It is the hidden county at the heart of rural England and needs to be protected.

Leicestershire’s countryside is unique, essential, precious and finite – and it is in danger.  Every year, a little bit more is lost forever to urban sprawl, new roads, housing, industry and other developments. Rural communities are threatened.  Local people lack affordable housing, post offices, pubs and local shops close. Intensive farming is changing the character of the countryside and climate change, too, will have serious impacts on the rural environment and our flora and fauna.

Standing up for your countryside

We work locally in Leicestershire and through our national office in London to stand up for the countryside: to protect it from the threats it faces, and to shape its future for the better.

The thing about CPRE’s work is that you don’t notice it.  People only notice the beautiful rolling farmland, the hedges, woods and trees alive with birds, the biodiverse field margins and much loved and valued local green spaces and countryside.  Most have no idea how hard won it can be to keep it that way.

CPRE nationally has been standing up for the countryside for over 85 years and here in Leicestershire for over 75.  In that time, we’ve helped to influence and apply planning laws that have, against the odds, preserved the special beauty and character of the countryside.

Do you value Leicestershire’s beauty?  Do you want to protect it?
