CPRE Leicestershire Objects to Sharnford Greenfield Development

CPRE Leicestershire has submitted a formal objection to planning application 26/0361/OUT, which proposes the construction of 120 homes and a retail unit on greenfield land north of Leicester Road, Sharnford.

The proposed development would be built outside the village's agreed settlement boundary on designated open countryside. We believe it conflicts with local planning policy and would have a significant impact on the character of Sharnford and its surrounding landscape.

Our objection follows the dismissal of a very similar proposal for the same site by the Planning Inspectorate last year. The Inspector concluded that the development would be unsustainable and harmful to the village's rural character. In our view, the circumstances have not changed.

Sharnford continues to have limited public transport and cycling infrastructure, meaning a development of this scale would leave many future residents heavily reliant on private cars. We are also concerned that approving the application would undermine the Fosse Villages Neighbourhood Plan and set an unwelcome precedent for further development on protected greenfield land.

While CPRE Leicestershire supports well-planned, sustainable development in appropriate locations, we believe this proposal is in the wrong place and would result in unnecessary urban sprawl at the expense of our countryside.
