CPRE launches campaign for a rooftop solar revolution

In May, CPRE nationally officially launched a major new rooftop renewables campaign, to urge the government to fully realise the potential of solar on rooftops and to kick start a rooftop revolution.

The publication of a ground-breaking report based on expert analysis from University College London academics found that new builds, large commercial roofs like warehouses and car parks, could host 60% of the solar panels needed to meet the government’s ambitious target for 70 GW of solar energy by 2035, at a low cost. Conversely, using only greenfield sites to meet this target would use 180,000 hectares of the countryside, an area larger than Greater London.

The centrepiece of the launch was our new report: Shout from the rooftops: delivering a common-sense solar revolution, which uncovers the vast potential of roofs – a largely untapped and overlooked resource – to generate the renewable energy our country needs.
